Hands working with a wrench in a vehicle's engine bay
Intermittent stall diagnosis

Stalling at red lights — with a cause we didn't expect

Concern
Stalled on takeoff from a stop and restarted once the engine settled. Multiple test drives did not reproduce it.
What we found
Worn engine mounts let the main computer connector touch the firewall edge under firm acceleration.
Outcome
Recreating the customer's exact conditions — firm acceleration from a stop — is what made the diagnosis possible.

Oil leak diagnosis

A persistent oil leak — and a $25 fix

Concern
An oil leak and odor that continued after gasket work at another shop — about $831 spent, according to the customer.
What we found
A severely damaged oil filler cap seal — it leaked while driving, so idle-only checks could miss it.
Outcome
The leak was resolved by locating the actual source before any further repairs.

Charging system diagnosis

Only 1,200 miles — but mileage didn't tell the whole story

Concern
Difficult starting during the previous year's cold weather, on a vehicle with just 1,200 miles.
What we found
A weak battery and an intermittently failing alternator — and surges had already damaged the power control module.
Outcome
Low mileage and long periods of sitting do not eliminate age-related issues.

Fuel system diagnosis

2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI

Wouldn't start on an incline

Concern
Would not start when parked on an incline. The customer had previously been told it needed a fuel pump control module and fuel sending unit.
What we found
High-pressure fuel pump measured about 1,200 PSI against roughly 2,000 PSI expected.
Outcome
After more than an hour on an incline steeper than the customer's driveway, the GTI started normally on retest. No additional parts were needed.

Misfire diagnosis

Infiniti

Shaking, flashing light, and smoke

Concern
Shaking, a flashing check-engine light, and smoke from the exhaust.
What we found
Oil about 2 quarts overfilled after a recent oil change, plus a failed spark plug and ignition coil.
Outcome
The engine ran smoothly and the misfire concern was resolved.

2008 Chevrolet Suburban

A plan for a high-mileage purchase

Concern
Overall mechanical inspection of a recently purchased, high-mileage, one-owner vehicle.
What we found
Clean interior and cold A/C — but worn engine mounts, a rear main seal leak, and a failed rear air-ride system.
Outcome
A clear picture of the Suburban's condition and a repair plan that fit the customer's ownership plans.
