Intermittent stall diagnosis

Stalling at red lights — with a cause we didn't expect

The concern

The vehicle stalled on takeoff from a stop and restarted once the engine settled. The customer described an uncomfortable and unpredictable experience. Multiple test drives did not reproduce the stall.

The diagnosis

Hours of checking wiring, spark plugs, ignition coils, and fuel pressure turned up nothing. All available technicians gathered for a focused 30-minute diagnostic session. Under firm acceleration, worn engine mounts allowed excessive engine movement — enough for the main computer connector to contact the firewall edge and briefly interrupt the electrical connection. When the engine returned to its resting position, the connection restored and the vehicle restarted.

The repair

Replacing the worn engine mounts addressed the cause by eliminating the excessive movement that allowed the connector to make contact with the firewall.

The outcome

Matching the customer's exact conditions — firm acceleration from a stop — and bringing the full team together were what made the diagnosis possible. Intermittent concerns that don't appear on routine checks often require recreating the specific situation the customer described.
