Why a code is not a diagnosis
A trouble code names a system that reported a fault. It does not name the part that failed. A misfire code, for example, can come from a spark plug, an ignition coil, an injector, a vacuum leak or a mechanical problem, and replacing the first part on the list is how repair bills grow without the problem going away. That is why we test the circuit and the component before recommending anything. A free code read at a parts store is a useful first step, but the testing that follows is what tells you which part actually needs to be replaced.
Problems that come and go
Some faults only show up under certain conditions, and a vehicle that runs fine in the bay can be hard to catch. In one documented repair, a car would not start on an incline; in another, a car stalled only under firm acceleration from a stop. In both, recreating the conditions the customer described is what made the diagnosis possible. If your problem is intermittent, tell us exactly when it happens. Even if the light has gone out, the code usually stays stored in the vehicle's memory, and we can read that history.
Our scan tools
We use Snap-on and Autel advanced scan tools with active subscriptions that are updated monthly. That includes OEM (manufacturer) software updates and technical service bulletins (TSBs), so the testing starts from current information for your vehicle.
