Fuel system diagnosis

2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI

Wouldn't start on an incline

The concern

The customer brought the vehicle in because it would not start when parked on an incline. They had previously been told it needed a fuel pump control module and fuel sending unit. A fault that only appears in one condition narrows the search considerably — but only if the testing is done before the parts are bought.

The diagnosis

We checked fuel pressure, volume, and electrical supply against OEM specifications. Under the test conditions for this vehicle, the high-pressure fuel pump produced about 1,200 PSI versus approximately 2,000 PSI expected. A no-start condition can come from several directions, so measuring pump output against spec is what separates a confirmed fault from a plausible theory.

The repair

The approach was to replace the high-pressure fuel pump first and retest, rather than replacing several fuel system components at once. If the measured fault is the cause, correcting it should resolve the condition — and retesting is what confirms that.

The outcome

The starting concern was resolved. After more than an hour on an incline steeper than the customer's driveway, the GTI started normally on retest. No additional parts were needed — neither the control module nor the sending unit — and the customer was pleased with the lower-cost outcome.
