Shaking, flashing light, and smoke

A technician leaning into an engine bay to work on ignition components

The concern

A first-time customer, who chose us after reading our reviews, brought the vehicle in shaking, with a flashing check-engine light and smoke from the exhaust. A flashing light is the vehicle signalling a condition serious enough to warrant prompt attention rather than a wait-and-see approach.

The diagnosis

Following a recent oil change, the engine oil was approximately 2 quarts overfilled. We also found a valve cover gasket leak and a failed spark plug and ignition coil contributing to the misfire. Symptoms this dramatic often have more than one contributing factor, which is why the inspection covered the engine rather than stopping at the first fault found.

The repair

The customer approved replacement of the valve cover gasket, spark plugs, and affected ignition components. With the valve cover removed, we documented oil sludge buildup, then completed the approved repairs before retesting. As with every repair here, the findings were presented first and the work went ahead on the customer's approval.

The outcome

After the approved work, the engine ran smoothly and the misfire concern was resolved.
