Charging system diagnosis

Hard starting, and a wire that was too small

A vehicle's battery, fuse box and wiring harness in the engine bay

The concern

The vehicle was consistently hard to start.

What the customer suspected

A weak battery or a defective alternator.

The diagnosis

Testing showed faulty wiring between the alternator and the battery that prevented proper charging. The alternator tested good.

The contributing cause

An undersized aftermarket wire had been installed instead of wiring that meets the manufacturer's specifications.

The repair

We replaced the inappropriate wire with correctly specified wiring. The alternator did not need replacing. Because the battery was aging, we also recommended replacing it as a preventive measure, especially with colder weather approaching.

Customer benefit

Replacing the battery and alternator without correcting the wiring would not have resolved the underlying charging fault. The customer avoided replacing an alternator that tested good and learned about the aging battery before cold weather.
