Oil leak diagnosis

A persistent oil leak — and a $25 fix

A technician leaning over an open hood to inspect the engine

The concern

A customer reported an ongoing oil leak. Previous work at another shop had addressed the oil pan and valve cover gaskets, but the leak and odor continued. Further work addressing possible leaks brought the customer's costs to approximately $831, according to the customer — yet the leak persisted and the customer was monitoring their oil level.

The diagnosis

We inspected the prior work and verified PCV system function. A thorough inspection found the source: a severely damaged oil filler cap seal. The seal leaked during driving but did not show the same symptoms at idle, so idle-only checks could miss it.

The repair

Replacing the oil filler cap resolved the leak. The part cost approximately $25.

The outcome

Locating the actual leak source before proceeding with further repairs can save significant time and expense. When a leak persists after gasket work, the filler cap and PCV system are worth checking early in the process.
